Marketplace: CBD and Hemp Products
CBD is an increasingly popular OTC option for pain management, and the range of offerings continues to expand. What are some of the latest products available to DME pharmacies?
Many DME pharmacies are very familiar with the opportunities
offered by pain management. A wide variety of their
existing clients suffer pain management issues, and there are a
variety of products — OTC painkillers, prescription painkillers,
compression items, wraps, hot/cold therapy, or TENS units — that
they can offer to their clients to address their pain and discomfort.
And, like any other product category, smart pain management
pharmacies are regularly hunting for ways to broaden their
revenues. The latest offering is, of course, CBD, which has been
riding a media publicity wave since the passage of the 2018 Farm
Bill that protected CBD sellers.
That said, if you’re still not sure what CBD is, we’re talking
about one of the compounds called cannabinoids that are
produced by the cannabis plant. The first cannabinoid most
everyone has heard of is THC, the psychoactive component in
recreational marijuana (and THC actually represents a range of
cannabinoids, such as THC-9 and THC-8). CBD, also known as
cannabidiol, is the cannabinoid often used in managing pain
issues, as well as insomnia and sometimes anxiety.
CBD products are sold in varying dosages that might or might not
contain very small percentages of THC, as well. The products range
from oil tinctures taken under the tongue, capsules, gummies and lotions.
Consumers can buy them online and, depending on what state
a person lives in, he or she can buy it at retail establishments.
In terms of the actual CBD, there are different types of CBD.
Some CBD products are based on an isolate of CBD, meaning
that it is just the CBD and nothing else. Other products are what is
called a full- or broad-spectrum CBD products, meaning the CBD
is harvested and packaged in a product in such a way that it contains
other chemicals found in the cannabis plant. Moreover, some
products combine CBD with other cannabinoids, such as THC, or
entirely different ingredients such as additional painkillers.
Bearing all that in mind, it’s important to ensure staff have
the right understanding about CBD in terms of options, benefits,
and usage so that they can pass that on to customers. This
starts with educating staff so that they are completely on top of
the product options and benefits available to patients, just like
any other product that a provider might offer.
And, like many HME offerings, the vendors of CBD products are
often there to help with educational materials and pamphlets, and
some even offer sales support in the form of advisors that can help
steer patients to the most sensible, appropriate solution for them.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the latest CBD offerings on
the market.

New line offers Delta-8 THC via a gummy and a tincture
PūrWell’s newest product
line, Pūr8, offers 100 percent
hemp-derived Delta-8 THC
in two convenient forms: a gummy and a
tincture. Unlike CBD isolate that binds exclusively
to the CB1 receptor, Pūr8 binds to both
CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid
system, thus significantly increasing its
therapeutic efficacy. The 100 percent hempderived
Delta-8 THC in Pūr8 has been shown
to exhibit antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetitestimulating,
analgesic, and neuroprotective
properties, and contains no artificial flavors,
dyes, and sweeteners such as high fructose
corn syrup (HFCS) . And Delta-8 THC is
federally legal OTC in all 50 states, according
to the 2018 Hemp Farm Bill. The gummies
