2022 HME Business Handbook: Pain Management

Types of CBD: What's Right For Your Patients?

Pain ManagementBaby boomers spend an average of $100 a month on pain management, and research shows they prefer to buy solutions from healthcare professionals. The best news of all, those consumers are the same people HME providers already see today. Moreover, working with a reliable CBD company can provide an opportunity to meet the demands of patients wanting alternatives to narcotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

There’s solid data available that supports this. A study released by Project CDB in 2019, “Cultivating Wellness: A Survey on the Who, What, When, Where and Why of CBD,” surveyed 3,506 people with 200 questions aiming to assess factors such as who uses CBD, the types of products used, to the purpose of the use and the outcomes. The survey uncovered several very compelling findings:

  • Almost two-thirds were over the age of 44, and roughly 20 percent were over the age of 64.
  • Users reported a 60 percent decrease in pain intensity.
  • CBD reduced respondents’ time to get to sleep from about an hour to 20 minutes.
  • Participants reported waking up less often — 1.4 times per night versus 4.3.
  • 92 percent of participants experienced some relief from anxiety; 68 percent said their nervousness was “much better.”

FOUR TYPES OF CBD

There are four primary types of CBD available on the market today: fullspectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, CBD isolate, and water-soluble, nanoamplified CBD isolate plus terpenes.

Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD are distillate oils that contain a combination of cannabinoids with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), terpenes and other compounds. Broad-spectrum removes the majority of THC, but trace amounts are still embedded in the oil. THC even in trace amounts is a concern to many medical professionals due to possible side effects and adverse outcomes. The absorption rate for distillate oil is approximately 6 percent and requires liver function to be absorbed in the body.

CBD isolate refers to CBD that is isolated from THC and the rest of the compounds in the plant to provide a pure form of CBD that does not contain even trace amounts of THC. However, the lack of additional compounds may limit its effectiveness.

Water-soluble, nano-amplified 99.9 percent CBD isolate plus terpenes is a refined version of CBD Isolate in which CBD is isolated and extracted from the plant. A nano-emulsification process converts raw crystal isolate powder into nano water-soluble CBD to increase its bioavailability. The extracted natural terpenes are then infused while ensuring the product contains no THC.

THE BENEFITS OF WATER-SOLUBLE, NANO-AMPLIFIED 99.9 PERCENT CBD

This type’s benefits:

  • Purest form of CBD
  • No risk of intoxication
  • Entourage effect; other chemicals found in the cannabis plant work with the CBD to boost its benefit
  • Enhanced potency
  • Enhanced bioavailability
  • Users will not test positive for THC

Nano water-soluble, THC-free, CBD is engineered to bypass digestive processes and prevent gastrointestinal effects and potential drug interactions.

TERPENES SYNERGISTIC EFFECTS

The entourage effect can be accomplished without involving THC.

Terpenes are believed to amplify the effects of CBD by playing a role at a cellular level and interacting with the ECS receptors, according to “Taming THC: potential cannabis synergy and phytocannabinoid-terpenoid entourage effects,” by GW Pharmaceuticals’ Ethan Russo (this was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology in 2011).

The FDA considers some terpenes to be Generally Recognized as Safe for food use, provided they are used in accordance with FDA regulations. For example, linalool in lavender is used for relaxation and caryophyllene is often used for its anti-inflammatory properties.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CBD COMPANY

As mentioned, partnering with the right company can help you address patients’ needs. Here’s what to look for:

  • Licensed USA farm.
  • Third-party full panel testing with Certificate of Analysis (COA).
  • Web-based track and trace system.
  • Compliant product labeling.
  • Training & education.
  • Protocols & guidelines.
  • Customized provider online store.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

In a 2019 study conducted by Nakano et al., nano water-soluble, THC free CBD delivers greater bioavailability than conventional CBD oil with the following advantages:

  • More complete absorption; not dependent on liver function
  • Faster onset of action; maximized therapeutic benefit
  • Accommodates more specific dosing needs
  • Requires lower dose to be effective
  • Minimizes potential drug interactions and side effects.
